Based at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, we study the complex non-equilibrium dynamics of soft matter systems, particularly systems inspired by biological matter. Our research interests include far-from-equilibrium, collective dynamics in self-driven agents,  constraint dynamics of biological filaments, growth and locomotion in sentient systems, and non-equilibrium phase separation in active systems.

Recent Works

We study the emergent dynamics of flexible active chains in the presence of inertia. The numerical results for chain dynamics compared with analytical expressions derived for short and long chains. â€‹

We investigate the spontaneous motion of an elliptical Janus particle, driven by Marangoni forces, on a water surface to understand how particle shape and size influence its dynamics.

Wetting.png

We investigate the wetting transitions displayed by the collection of active Brownian particles confined within rigid, impenetrable, flat walls. Our analyses reveal that an enhanced rotational diffusion at the walls can be used as a control parameter for wetting transitions.

J Chem. Phys. (2025)

We have developed a simulation model to study the hydrodynamic flow fields around Brownian colloidal particles with an active surface patch.  This approach provides good estimates of both near- and far-field flows around the colloid.

We study the origin and emergence of such patterns in noiseless, flexible active chains in the overdamped limit. We show the chain trajectories display patterns  include circles, periodic waves, and quasiperiodic, bound trajectories resembling spirographic patterns.

Phys Rev E (2026)

We study the dynamics and pattern formation of ordered arrays of active semi-flexible filaments, each of which is pinned at one end and free at the other.  We show that for a range of activity and filament separation, the filament array self-assembles into regularly spaced, kinetically arrested compact clusters.
